What black tie means
Black tie is the most common formal dress code you will see on an invitation. It means a tuxedo: a black or midnight-blue dinner jacket with satin lapels, matching trousers with a satin stripe, a white formal shirt, and a black bow tie. It reads as sharp, timeless, and correct for almost any evening event.
When you will see it. You will see black tie on evening weddings, galas, charity balls, and formal holiday parties, usually starting at or after 6pm.

Black Tie questions, answered
What is the difference between black tie and black tie optional?
Black tie means a tuxedo is expected. Black tie optional means a tuxedo is welcome but a dark suit with a tie is also acceptable, so you have a little more freedom.
Can I wear a black suit instead of a tuxedo for black tie?
A tuxedo is the correct choice. A black suit can pass in a pinch, but the satin lapels, bow tie, and formal shirt of a tuxedo are what the dress code is really asking for.
What color tuxedo is best for black tie?
Black is the classic. Midnight blue is a popular alternative that reads even darker than black under evening light. Both are correct.
Do I need a bow tie for black tie?
Yes. A black bow tie is part of what makes an outfit black tie. A long tie belongs with a suit, not a tuxedo.
